As I’ve said before, the Universe is made of positive and negative energy. So are we. This applies to our physical and spiritual nature.
It’s woven through our emotional and mental workings as well. This phenomenon presents itself no matter where you look.
Yin-Yang are the Chinese symbols for male and female. They encompass not only the physical forms, but also the concept of the masculine and feminine nature or the powerful versus the weak.
But it doesn’t stop there. The reality is, everything in the universe is masculine and, or feminine to some degree.
It applies to everything on earth, from the animals that live on her to the stones beneath their feet.
Yin-yang simply describes the kinds of behavior it follows. Masculine energy tends to be more aggressive, direct and faster. Feminine energy follows a natural course like water. It is more passive, sometimes indirect and is somewhat slower, but no less powerful.
Of course like everything in the universe these rules are affected by the degree of yin-yang energy which resides in them. Although there are varying degrees, no one person or thing is pure masculine or feminine.
I’ve met people who come close on both sides but no one is pure. This is because to be pure masculine would be dangerous (not to mention somewhat annoying) and to be pure feminine would be almost useless. Now I know some feminists are going, “Now wait a minute,” with that last statement, but if you take a good look with eyes open, you will know I speak the truth.
If you observe humans in their natural settings you will quickly find that whether you’re talking about male or female there are certain traits the more masculine have. On the opposite end of the spectrum, feminine people also have traits in common.
In nature it isn’t quite as easy to see, but once you begin to look it will become clear that we are simply a microcosm of the earth and she is just a microcosm of the universe. In all the concept of masculine and feminine traits apply. They apply because to work magic one must learn to work in harmony with nature.
Now I have to tell you this is a subject of great interest to me and I could ramble on concerning traits shared by masculine and feminine humans, animals, spirits and elements so on and so forth. I will be a good girl though and stick to them as they apply to magic.
The traits of femininity are nurturing, caring and mothering. Emotionalism, intuition and a strong tendency to forgive also belong to the goddess.
Feminine energy is one of the most loving and healing energies in the universe. It is available to anyone at any time. To let it in, one simply needs to focus on the goddess in any of her forms.
Once you are connected to the healing power and your attention is focused on the desired outcome miracles can happen.
The traits of Masculinity are Challenging, self-centered and Directive. Logic and reason as well as a tendency to fight or get physical come from a desire to control.
Masculine energy is direct, passionate and volatile. It also is available to anyone at any time. To let it in, just focus on the god in any of his forms.
When you’re connected to the brute force and your attention is on the outcome, things will get done.
The practice of magic is completely wound up in the yin-yang. For starters, the sun, or greater light is considered to be masculine while the moon or lesser light is feminine.
Concerning the elements, (earth, air, fire and water) which we will discuss in more detail soon) earth is feminine, air is masculine, fire is masculine and water is feminine.
Even the tools are considered to be masculine or feminine in nature. For example: The Athame (witches knife) is masculine, as is the wand. The chalice or cup is feminine. On your own body you have a masculine hand and a feminine hand as it applies to magic. Your masculine hand would be the one you write with naturally. In magic this hand is for sending. Your feminine hand is the weaker hand and in magic is most useful to draw things to you and to hold them.
Take some time to reflect on whether your are more masculine or feminine. When you know then you have a good hint at the type of magic that will come easiest for you. Always remember working with nature and not against it will make for more successful spells. That includes working with your nature as well as the earths.
