What is Gout?
Gout is a form of arthritis which comes on suddenly and without any warning. Normally it strikes the joints of the big toe on either foot but is not limited to the feet. It can occur in any other part of the body; however the feet are most common.
What Causes Gout?
Gout occurs when levels of uric acid in the body get too high. The body is not able to metabolize it quickly enough to eliminate as urine. The build up results in the formation of crystal deposits in the joints.
These same crystals can collect in the urinary tract and cause Kidney stones.
Where does Uric Acid come from?
Most commonly uric acid build up is caused by over indulgence in foods such as red meat and alcohol which are actually triggers, not the cause, of a gout attack. The body’s inability to eliminate uric acid quickly is thought to be hereditary.
