For thousands of years, countless religions and spiritual traditions have celebrated the sun—the fire element—during the holiday season. Whether you are Pagan and celebrate the magical winter solstice or are Christian and celebrate the birth of Jesus (an avatar known to bring light into the world), the holiday season is an incredible time, ripe for spiritual growth and much healing.
I love the holidays
It’s a time where we are given cultural permission to joyfully relax and enjoy the abundance of our physical senses. We can soak up the Light in so many different ways. Indeed, there is something so inexplicably delicious about bundling up and strolling around our neighborhood at night, gazing at the illuminated houses and trees of our neighbors: festive and sparkling with tiny blue, green, red, and golden lights. Indeed, there is something so amazingly magical about relaxing by a roaring fireplace or strolling around a shopping mall, an explosion of colors, glitter and shine.
Take Time For You
The holiday season is not just about shopping or outward activity, however. The holiday season is an apt time for silence and meditation, a time for breathing and slowing down. For exploring and loving the sacred presence within.
A meditation technique that fits so well with the mood of the season is gazing into a candle flame. Have you ever tried this, friends? It’s so amazing. Whether you are new to meditation or an old pro, I invite you to try candle flame meditation: a simple, yet powerful practice.
Here’s how to do it.
Select a candle. You can use a big one, medium one, or even a tiny tea light—the size of the candle doesn’t really matter. I do, however, strongly suggest using a white unscented candle—because I wouldn’t want you, my friend, to inhale all those nasty toxic chemicals such as formaldehyde that are typically found in scented/colored candles.
Place the candle as close to eye-level as possible, or slightly above eye-level. This is important because if you place the candle too far below eye-level you may strain your neck.
Turn off all your gadgets and make sure that you’re unlikely to be disturbed by others. Set an alarm for ten or twenty minutes (or however long you want) so you can focus totally on what you are doing without having to worry about how much time has elapsed.
Light your candle.
Adjust your body that so you find a comfortable seated position that you can hold for the duration of time you have set. You can sit on a folded blanket, a meditation cushion or simply a chair—whatever works is fine. However, I do recommend that you sit with your spine as straight as possible. Why? Sitting with a straight spine helps the kundalini energy to flow.
When we meditate and free ourselves from the restless thoughts in our minds, there is a natural release of healing energy that is stored at the base of the spine. If our spines are straight (or fairly straight), this best facilitates an upward flow of energy, so it can travel all the way into our third eye chakra (spiritual sight center) and eventually the crown chakra (connection to the cosmic realms). This kundalini energy brings deepening feelings of peace, relaxation, happiness, and joy.
Simply gaze into the flame. Watch the fire dance.
During your meditation, there will of course be thoughts that arise. No problem—you’re human! This happens! No worries. Yet, the trick is to catch yourself in the act and then stop. If you notice yourself thinking thoughts such as forming opinions about how the flame looks, wondering how many minutes you have left to sit there, planning what you’ll eat for dinner, replaying memories from earlier in the day, or whatever, simply realize that you are thinking and make the conscious choice to allow them to fade away and resume your focused gazing on the flame. Don’t chase the thought you’re having into the next thought. Stop the thought process, with gentleness, compassion, and love. The first time you try to meditate, this process of stopping thought may be difficult. Stick with it. It becomes easier and easier to do, the more you practice.
When the alarm rings, bow to the flame and say a quick prayer of gratitude.
Friends, what I love about this meditation is how fun and joyful it can feel. And powerful!
To be sure, there is something so radically intense and life-affirming about allowing our consciousness to blend into the flame. Through this blending, this gazing, this gentle concentration, all the dramas and happenings of the external world seem to drop away—and we are left with a profound sense of simplicity. Peace. As we gaze into the Light, we get in touch with something real. We heal.
Fire reminds us that all is well and all the power we ever needed was always right inside of us. There is no need to look elsewhere! Just be and feel it.
In this gazing, we become One with the flame. We melt our separate sense of identity. Our egos drop away as thoughts slow or sometimes cease completely for a few seconds or a few minutes. We see the flame for the magic that it is. All of life.
