I could spend time talking about the history of witches, their beginnings, their persecution and all that, but I won’t. Don’t get me wrong. I understand that history is important and I certainly don’t want to belittle sisters and brothers who have gone before us, however, there are many books out there filled to the brim with such knowledge.
What You Want
If I’m right, and I usually am. You didn’t open this book looking for history. You want change. Am I wrong? What you need is a road map to lead you the right way.
At the outset, let me state that there are many teachings you could follow. This is only one such path. It is no better or worse than any other. The secret is to choose “your,” path. A wise Christian minister once told me that in all of life we must eat the meat and leave the bones.
Magic in You
Here’s the thing. The magic is inside of you. It is already there. The goal is to help you to access it. If something we say doesn’t feel right, or doesn’t fit well with you. Then ignore it and do it your way.
I once met a witch from the south. Her wisdom was profound but her rhymes sucked. I used a spell she gave me, but changed the chant so I felt comfortable with it. I have that spell in my magic book. What is important is that your actions are deliberately done in the name of whatever it is you desire.
What Do You Want?
You’ll hear me harp on this a lot, but please listen to me. Magic is about what you want. You must go for what you really want. Do not be detoured by the fictitious beliefs of others. Hear me when I say this. If you don’t go for what’s in your heart, you can’t expect any real results.
We feel, a good first step into the occult is through initiation. There are two types . One is an initiation into the craft in general. This can be done by a mentor, priest or by one’s self.
The second is an initiation into a coven or group. It’s usually done by the priest or priestess of the coven and is attended by the whole group. Here we’re not concerned with group activity so it’s the first type we’ll discuss.
Initiations into the craft are varied, but all equally valid. The point is to get the deep mind to set up and take notice. We’ll talk about a couple so you get the idea. You can follow these outlines, use them as templates or disregard them completely and make up your own.
Your first steps might be self initiation. This is an easy thing to do, and can be as formal or relaxed as you desire to make it. Remember to ask this question. How can I do this that will help me to feel like the witch I am? This is a question you should ask about everything you do from your initiation on, but especially during spells.
Ritual of Commitment to the Path of Magic
Buy a simple white candle. As you pick it out, do so in the name of your ritual. On either the new or full moon, light the candle. As you do so say:
Shining candle burning bright
I light you on this new (or full) moon night.
Bless me now and set me free
And I’ll a witch forever be.
Sit before your candle and stare into its flame. Imagine the presence of Hecate goddess of witches standing behind you with her hands on your shoulders. In your heart and in your imagination, receive her blessing.
When you are sure she has blessed you, say the words. So mote it be, or so it is done. You are now a witch. Use this candle to burn in your living space to remind you of who you are. Or you could bury it in the earth.
I put mine in a special bottle I made into a candle holder. I use this for meditation and other simple rituals. The candle is long gone but the bottle is forever connected to it in my mind.
There are other forms of initiation. Paul Huson recommends reciting the Lord’s Prayer backward on three consecutive nights. It is quite effective for waking the deep mind. If you need that you can find it in Paul’s book “Mastering Witchcraft, a Practical Guide for Witches, Warlocks and Covens.
So, you’re a witch. You’ve taken that first step. You’ve done a ritual. You’re a new creature, a fledgling. But what does this mean.
It means you’ve placed yourself on a path to seek wisdom. From now on you’re a teacher to many but a student of all. You are always learning but as you follow your path you may find a strong urge to teach and share. This is normal and blessed is the person who answers that call.
Witchcraft is not about gaining magic. It’s about accessing it. The power is already there and always has been. So what is magic to a witch?
It’s the ability to act on people or things. It’s the ability to change what is into what you want. This is normally done by accessing the currents that run in three places.
- Body ● Earth ● Spirit
A firm understanding of each of these is essential to manipulating your reality. That is, after all, the reason you’re here. We’ll get to each of them in detail soon. For now, there are a few things you can do to start indoctrinating yourself as a witch.
Be All You Can Be
Number one, every time you speak to anyone remind yourself, (but not them) that they are talking to a witch. When you do this it may trigger fantasy during the conversation. Indulge yourself. Let your witch imagination run wild. If you go to a negative place simply consider this.
Does that fantasy give you pleasure? If so then all is fair. It’s not like you’re going to do it anyway, right? What’s really important is you’re exercising your imagination. In magic that is tantamount to success. Magic follows thought. (imagination)
As a matter of fact, feel free to dream up some fantastical scenario whenever you feel the urge. I have one warning concerning this, however. Once you begin to seek magic, it will also begin to seek you. Magic follows thought. The kind of thoughts and imaginations you put out will draw back to you the same kind of energy.
This is the phenomenon that birthed the karma myth. It is also the basis of the Wiccan nonsense about bad magic returning to you three times three. While it is true that negative attracts negative, three times three is a bit of an exaggeration. In any case, it is your job as the witch to decide what you are willing to risk for whatever reward you seek.
