Athames and wands are what I told you we would talk about this week and I rarely lie. So in that spirit of things I present to you this weeks blog.
Athames and wands are two very different creatures, but especially in witchcraft are used for the same purpose.
A lot of witches have either, or, but a lot also keep both. I’m one of the later. I use my wand for circles, calling directions and tracing magic symbols in the air. The Athame is more formal and I use it for darker magic. That, however is just my take on it. Like I said some witches have only a wand that they use for everything and some have an Athame instead of the wand. Once again it is all about your own preference.
A wand is an extension of the hand. It can be made of wood, glass, metal or even plastic, although I believe plastic would be a bit counter productive in magic.
When being used for magic, most often they are made of wood. Magicians seek those made of certain types of wood to enhance their magic. Often stones or gems are place on the end to further strengthen their potency. Some other ways to strengthen them are to draw or carve the names of Gods, Angels, Demons, etc.
So How Do You Make A Wand
Making a wand is a really personal thing. But here are the basic instructions. First you must decide if you want a specific kind of wood or other material.
If you want a special type of wood and it grows where you live it should be a simple matter to collect a suitable branch. If you want a type that doesn’t grow in your area then you must either order it or make a trip.
Once you find your stick you need to carve it down to the shape you want. From this point on what ever else you do is a matter of preference. Before you make the wand I suggest you cleanse it with salt water and smoke exorcism. If, however, you found the stick in the river or the ocean that will not be necessary.
once you have it made exactly the way you want it, be sure to bless it in some ceremonial way to the service of you. Now some witches might say to put it away for safe keeping, but I say keep it out and play with it. Yes play with it. You heard me right. Play with the damn thing.
“Why?”you might ask. Because the more you handle and love on that thing the more it becomes imbued with the power of you.
That’s a great question and I have a great answer. Essentially a wand is used as an extension of the hand. It is for pointing and directing energy. It can be used to trace the magic circle, to call the directions and to trace magic symbols in the air above things when called for.
Absolutely not! All you really need to perform magic is you. However, the addition of such magical implements in your spells can greatly increase the potency of your work.
An Athame is a ceremonial knife that is used for the same basic purpose as a wand.
I would really rather use a wand for the most part. However, there are times when an athame is appropriate.
I use it in matters of binding, and in any case where I am “cursing something or someone. (yes there are some cases when it is appropriate) You’ll know when that time is upon you.
Yes you could actually make an Athame, but I suggest meeting the universe half way. Buy the darn thing and then magnetize it and dedicate it to your service. It will draw all things to you just the same as if you forged it yourself.
As usual, the important thing is that you love that knife and it loves you.
Peace to you.
