Last week we talked about Earth as an element. This week let’s turn our attention to the magic of air.
It’s essential to existence. Nothing on earth can live without it. Motion and change are its aspects because it’s of movement. It’s a place of great instability.
He rules over intellectual and creative thinking, as well as communication, because they too are fleeting.
Masculine in nature, he is active, and watches over the magic of the four winds. It can manifest as a gentle breeze or a hurricane. The wind can take you where you want to go, but is not always dependable.
Yellow is his color. Now, I hear you saying, “Wait a minute, air is invisible.” and you’re right, but here is where the connection between the elements and the directions come into play.
He’s connected to the east. East is the direction associated with the sun. Because of this the element is connected to the color yellow.
Places sacred to it include the sky, high cliffs, and mountain tops where it can spread thin and cold the spirit may truly rest. However, our friend cannot lie down long. Sky scrapers and high towers are also sacred to the element of air, as are windswept plains.
Magic covered by air are spells having to do with divination, communication, visualization, concentration and of course, wind magic.
Invoke him to find the truth, for knowledge of a specific type or to find something you’ve lost.
Some ways to use air magic include throwing a symbolic object into the sky, suspending it from a high place, fanning or you even blowing on it. (this adds even more power which I will talk about later)
Sometimes tools are used to strengthen the air magic. These can include the broom, the wand or a hand held fan. A motorized fan could be used; however, it lacks the personal touch. Let’s face it. Your personal touch is what really counts isn’t it? while we’re on the subject, let’s not forget our good friend the feather. Because birds fly through the air they are associated with it.
The time of year most sacred to air is spring. On the wheel of the year spring, which follows winter also falls on the eastern position of it and then becomes also associated with air. Spring is the time of lightness and is the beginning of summers promise.
The time of day most loved by the air is morning. The rising of the sun communicates bright new promise for another day.
Since the air is about motion and sound. The senses most sacred to Air are hearing and smell. Catch the scent of wild flowers on a spring morning listen to the sound of the rushing wind promising a time of plenty to come.
